The course will provide a theoretical overview of the Ecological Sanitation concept, technical background knowledge for implementation of ecosan projects as well as practical hands-on sessions in real projects. The Ecosan Training Course will enable the participants to design, plan and implement their own projects based on the in-depth training from the course.
Why ecosan training courses in India? Though ecosan is becoming more and more known in India and several projects have raised awareness and acceptance of innovative sanitation systems, there is a significant lack of qualified personnel and people who actually implement projects at the grassroots level. As for today, none of the institutions in India offers any courses on ecosan and hardly any ecosan experts are available to cater for this urgent demand. The Innovative Ecological Sanitation Network India (IESNI) and organisations like UNICEF, SCOPE and Eco-Solutions and many others are continuously implementing new innovative sanitation solutions. The many successful projects and large-scale implementations have created a market in the commercial, cooperative and public sector in India. This demand has to be met by qualified personnel, who are able to tailor innovative sanitation solutions. Hence, in cooperation with ecosan experts from Europe, ESF now introduces the first ecosan training course in India. Inspired by the success of courses in Norway, Sweden, China and Africa, ESF specifically designed an ecosan course for Indian participants.
Why should you participate? You work as an engineer in the field of water supply and sanitation and look for new options for your company? You work in a government agency and want thorough information on cost efficient and environmentally sound sanitation options for rural, peri-urban and urban areas, which can also help to meet the energy demand of your community? You work in a NGO and want to find out how to provide sustainable affordable sanitation in a household centred, participatory approach to serve sustainable development and human dignity? You are interested in sustainable sanitation solutions for your home, neighbourhood or town? Then this course is for you!
What will you gain? The ecosan training courses will provide you with the knowledge to meet the challenges of successfully implementing socially, economically and ecologically viable sanitation projects. After completing the course, various opportunities are open for you: • Implement the case study you developed during the course with the technical and partial funding assistance from the IESNI. • Implement ecosan projects in your NGO or Government Agency with the advisory support of IESNI and the Ecosan Services Foundation. • Join national or international institutions in need for Indian ecosan experts. • Open up an engineering firm or expand the scope of your existing one and implement ecosan projects in your region. • Implement ecosan systems in your home, neighbourhood and community. You will not only have a hygienically safe toilet, but you can also produce fertilizer, soil conditioner, irrigation water and biogas for cooking! • Contribute to providing cost-effective, ecologically and socially viable sanitation solutions to some of those 650 Million Indians in need of proper sanitation. • Help improving the state of our polluted rivers, lakes and groundwater by applying environmentally sound sanitation systems. • Adopt socially viable ecosan solutions to support anti-scavenging legislations.
How will the course be structured? Interactive Teaching Methods • Classic Face-to-Face Lectures explain the concept and shed light on the theoretical background. • Case Studies give insights from real-life examples. • Group works & Role Plays reveal creativity and make particip nts think in a holistic way. •Technical Exercises help participants to thoroughly understand the various applied technologies and provide them with the ability to design and implement ecosan projects themselves. • Feasibility Studies of real ecosan projects force the participants to put in their accumulated theoretical knowledge into practice. They develop a holistic reuse concept, a technical design, do cost calculations and a stakeholder analysis. The results are presented and discussed in the plenary and later often lead to the actual implementation through the participants’ organisations.
Participants get a full package of up to date learning material consisting of: • Course folder works and case studies; with handouts of all lectures, group • Technical manuals for Urine Diversion Dehydration (UDD) Toilets and Urine Management, Biogas Sanitation and Greywater Management; • New “ecosan curriculum 2.1” lectures, tutorials and hundreds of on CD with dozens of tailor-made the most comprehensive and up to date scientific articles on ecological sanitation available; • State-of-the art teaching material “Capacity Building for Ecological Sanitation” published by the GTZ & UNESCO.

The concept behind ecological sanitation (ecosan) is that sanitation problems could be solved more sustainable and efficiently if the resources contained in excreta and wastewater were recovered and used rather than discharged into the water bodies and the surrounding environment.

It is important to create awareness, educate and share information to bring the required paradigm swing towards ecological sanitation (ecosan), and this is well-achieved through promotional activities - participation in events, lectures, grass-root level participation, etc.
