| ecosan curriculum 2.3 |
The ecosan curriculum was created in order to compile the large amount of information in a structured and comprehensive way. Up to now, it is the only comprehensive work on ecosan in digital form. The structure of the CD allows it to integrate a large share of the papers, books, articles and presentations on ecosan. The CD itself is divided into six different Modules, the very first one being the summary and overview of Modules 1 to 5. Module one gives an overview of how sanitation is related to the Millennium Development goals. Module 2 explains the concept of ecosan in depth. Module three then deals with the technological aspects of ecosan, while module four focuses on management, implementation and operation. The final module shows ecosan projects all over the world.
All modules are available as PowerPoint presentations and as tutorial modules for self-study. In this way, the CD is useful both to those who only want to get an overview of ecosan, as well as those who are looking at a specific aspect of ecosan, and those who want to thoroughly study the subject with all its various aspects and implications. The new version 2.3 is now available with even more background information’s, as for example the 4 volumes of the WHO guidelines for the save use of water, faeces and greywater. Furthermore, an additional module treats the issue of institutional aspects and all the modules have been updated with open-source materials on ecological sanitation systems. The CD “ecosan Curriculum 2.3” can be ordered from Ecosan Services Foundation against the handling charge of Rs 1000 plus service tax for individuals from India( for other countries it will be Rs 100 plus service tax) or Rs. 5500 for courses.

The flush toilet is ecologically mindless. Think about it.
Publication by Sunita Narain (winner of the 2005 Stockholm Water Prize) on the mindlessness of flush toilets. Though functioning alternatives exist, we still waste billions of litres of precious water just to flush away highly polluted wastewater.

A Thinkpiece on ecological sanitation
This paper is a thinkpiece to shoe that there are comprehensive experiences and available technologies that meet new and sustainable sanitation requirements. Ecological sanitation constitutes a diversity of options for both rich and poor countries, from household level up to wastewater systems for mega-cities. The objective of this paper is to show that ecological sanitation can play an important role in this context and it needs to become recognise

Decentralized Treatment Systems (DTS)
A Decentralized Treatment Systems (DTS) treats wastewater making maximum use of natural gifts like gravity, microbiological activity or temperature. This result in a system which can work without technical energy input (in fact it’s producing energy in form of methane/biogas) and needs only minimal maintenance. DTS application provides state of the art technology at affordable prices because material/inputs used for construction are locally available. |

The concept behind ecological sanitation (ecosan) is that sanitation problems could be solved more sustainable and efficiently if the resources contained in excreta and wastewater were recovered and used rather than discharged into the water bodies and the surrounding environment.

It is important to create awareness, educate and share information to bring the required paradigm swing towards ecological sanitation (ecosan), and this is well-achieved through promotional activities - participation in events, lectures, grass-root level participation, etc.
