The concept behind ecological sanitation (ecosan) is that sanitation problems could be solved more sustainable and efficiently if the resources contained in excreta and wastewater were recovered and used rather than discharged into the water bodies and the surrounding environment.

This unit deals with integral and complex projects composed of multiple components including training, design and implementation of sanitation systems, demonstration, networking, promotion and awareness raising activities. aiming at reaching different types of stakeholders for the promotion of ecosan. This unit coordinates the overall implementation of projects in benefit of entire communities and municipalities in cooperation with governmental agencies. Furthermore, this unit is in charge of the development of cooperation projects with international partners in the field of sanitation, developing proposals and actively participating in projects funded by the European Commission, World Bank, GTZ among other.
